Los romances fronterizos, desarrollados durante los últimos dos siglos de la Edad Media, exponen la prolongada coexistencia de moros y cristianos en la Andalucía de aquella época, enfrentados una y otra vez en diferentes clases de contiendas y con resultados diversos. En muchos casos, la redacción de las baladas evidencia claramente lo cercano de dichos acontecimientos, pues con frecuencia los hechos divulgados eran todavía muy recientes. Buena parte de los romances fronterizos se consideran así romances noticieros, de tal modo que siendo literatura, esa poesía es también historia, hasta el punto que no pocos de ellos tienen interés para los historiadores, y por entonces informaban a los cronistas de los hechos ocurridos. Para el pueblo los romances servían para conocer lo que sucedía o había sucedido, y se difundían cantados porque la inmensa mayoría de la gente no sabía leer.
